On November 14, 1948, the Mid-west Shetland and Harness Show Pony Breeders association met in a centrally located city of Des Moines, Iowa. This meeting formed the club that we know now as Central States Pony Association representing the central states of Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri, Nebraska, and Illinois.
The Central States Pony Association has been trotting along since. Their club membership had two rules at the time- Be in good standing with the American Shetland Pony Club and be a breeder or exhibitor in the states of the founding club.
Their mission was to offer shows not only for the ASPC but any pony registry that had harness ponies, to promote better classes, better sales and the improvement of all things concerning the American Shetland Pony and the Harness Show Ponies.
Today CSPA honors this coda with their annual show that rivals one of the best in the country as it is the precursor to the ASPC Congress. Where many American Shetland Pony, American Show Pony, Hackney Pony,
Welsh pony come to trial against the best ponies in the United States and Canada.
The purpose of this organization is to unite the small equine breeders, owners, exhibitors and enthusiasts of ASPC/AMHR/ASPR’s Area IV (Illinois, Missouri, and Wisconsin) and to promote Shetland Ponies, Miniature Horses, and American Show Ponies.
The objectives and purposes under which this association was formed and shall function include, but are not limited to: improving and promoting the breeds of American Shetlands, Miniature Horses, and American Show Ponies; facilitating interaction between owners, breeders, exhibitors and enthusiasts of such breeds who reside in Illinois, Wisconsin and Missouri – the American Shetland Pony Club, Inc.’s official Area IV – as well as encourage participation of similarly interested individuals from surrounding states; educating owners, members, potential members and other interested parties; organize shows, clinics, meetings or other activities related to, but not limited to, the aforementioned activities; cooperate with other organizations having similar interests and purposes.
